Dawn’s Embrace Shawl

The Dawn’s Embrace Shawl reflects the triangular shape of the shawl, much like the rays of the rising sun, symbolizing new beginnings. For Sera, dawn represents the start of her new life, a fresh chapter full of promise and possibility. The “Embrace” captures the comforting, protective nature of the shawl as it wraps around her, offering warmth and renewal, just as she is learning to embrace her journey of self-discovery and healing.

This shawl is based on the timeless Granny Stitch, reimagined into a graceful triangular shape. Known for its familiarity and simplicity, the Granny Stitch mirrors Sera’s steady progress, as each cluster of stitches builds upon the last, creating something larger and more whole.

Materials

  • Yarn: DK Weight (suggested: Wendy’s Wonders—Croma Hue). Gradient yarns create a nice flow of colors, but any yarn will work. You can also change colors at intervals if desired (note: this will create more ends to weave in).
  • Hook: 4mm (G) or size that complements your yarn for desired drape.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • Ch = Chain
  • DC = Double Crochet
  • SL ST = Slip Stitch
  • Turn = Turn work
  • [ ] = Work all stitches within brackets into the same ch-space
  • Repeat * *** instructions as indicated

Project Notes

DK weight yarn–ch-2 between 3-dc clusters works well.

Worsted or bulky yarn, use a ch-3 between clusters to maintain an open, airy structure.

Foundation Ring: Magic Ring (search online for video tutorials). OR ch5, join with sl st in first chain to make a circle.

Row 1

  • Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch-1 throughout).
  • Work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1, dc all into the ring.

Row 2

  • Ch 4 (equals dc + ch-1), turn.
  • 3 dc in the first ch-1 space, ch 1.
  • [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the ch-2 space, ch 1.
  • 3 dc in the next ch-1 space, ch 1.
  • Dc in the last stitch (3rd ch of starting ch-4 from the previous row).

Row 3

  • Ch 4 (equals dc + ch-1), turn.
  • *3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat from * to ch-2 space.
  • In the ch-2 space, work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc], ch 1.
  • *3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat from * across, ending with a dc in the last stitch (as in Row 2).

Repeat Row 3

  • Continue repeating Row 3 until the shawl reaches your desired size.

“Magic’s like yarn; it entangles those who pull too hard”
